On Saturday my high school, Righetti, made the CIF Southern Section Finals for water polo against Los Osos. We were excited, a joking and laughing bunch of 18 and 17 year-old kids that were confident in their ability. We knew our opponent well and we had beaten them before, so our confidence was high.
We reached the pool with high expectations and spirits. The game started off great. A 7-4 lead at half made us realize we were only sixteen minutes away from our goal.
That's when everything seemed to fall apart. Los Osos brought it within one at the third quarter mark, leaving our seniors devastated and pissed all at once.
But it wasn't enough.
The Righetti water polo team fell 12 to 9. The bus ride home was somber and depressing. Everyone felt the sadness in the air, and no matter what movie the coaches put on, no one would watch them.
It was a bitter day.
